Unfortunately, research has demonstrated that, while effective, traditional psychotherapy has some significant limitations. Indeed, while traditional psychotherapy can be quite effective in reducing symptom presentation, there is not great evidence to suggest that the strategies result in long-term effects. As such, at Thrive Wellness and Performance, we strive to take a functional approach, which means that we are more concerned with getting at the root cause of the problem, instead of placing a bandage on symptoms.
Our approach to mental health care is to place emphasis on holistic and integrative treatment of the mind, body, and spirit. We do so through a means of evidence-based practices that have demonstrated effectiveness in the long run. You can think of our approach as psychotherapy on steroids, as we add in adjunctive therapies like health coaching, biofeedback, and neurofeedback.
The initial intake is typically 60 to 90 minutes and consists of a comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation. This is the opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. The session is all about assessing your goals, values, and aspirations and then developing a tailored treatment plan that aims to get you back to living life to its full extent.
Depending on the type of consult, concerns, and goals, you may complete a full such psychophysiological profile, which is an assessment of your physiological response to stress. This establishes a baseline for the rest of treatment in order to compare scores at the start of treatment until the conclusion of treatment.

Biofeedback: Depending on the type of training, individuals will be hooked up to one or more sensors that examines their physiology. For example, with individuals with tension-type headaches or migraines, they may be hooked up to EMG sensors that assess the amount of muscular tension they are holding. Then, through the feedback on information, in real time and displayed on a computer screen, the individual learns how to manipulate and self-regulate the area of concern. In turn, the computer will provide you will feedback on how you are doing. Over time, you will learn these self-regulation techniques and be able to implement them throughout your day, resulting in less pain, anxiety, stress, etc.
Neurofeedback: Depending on the results of the QEEG Brain Map/Assessment, electrodes are placed on the areas of focus in different places on the scalp. These electrodes provide us with an EEG reading of brain waves. We then use feedback on the computer screen in the form of games, videos, and other means to shape the presentation of brain waves. For instance, if we have found that you are making "too much" of a specific brain wave, we will use the information to downtrain that specific brain wave. The end result will be in line with your goals. We follow-up with additional QEEG Brain Maps to provide us with the evidence of change from start to finish.

This is a very common question!
Traditional or conventional psychotherapy typically consists of a primary focus of psychopathology (depression, anxiety, trauma, etc.), Whereas, health coaching is focused on education and behavioral training for making lifestyle changes.
You can think of it this way: just like any sports team has a head coach, a health coach provide you with the motivation, education, and means for training so that you can live life to your fullest and be at peak performance. Instead of the use of traditional psychotherapy or counseling techniques, like cognitive behavioral therapy, health coaching focuses on the here and now and making behavioral change in your lifestyle.
This can range drastically, but we commonly see individuals who are looking to make behavioral changes to lose weight, enhance their energy or performance, increase healthy lifestyle activity, like exercise, nutrition modification, or improve mindset.
We have seen many individuals for health coaching, but here are a few primary examples: -weight loss/dietary modification -improve workout routine -management of chronic pain -improved sleep quality -improved sports performance -improved mindset -reduction in blood pressure -reaching health goals
